The last two episodes of Beyond highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the series. Leaving much of the show’s baggage in its dust, “The Hour of the Wolf” takes Holden (Burkely Duffield) and Charlie (Eden Brolin) on an impromptu road trip. Originally set out to gain Holden’s trust and deliver him to Frost (Martin Donovan), Charlie changes sides midstream – although threats against her foster sister lead to some serious internal conflict. The episode pushes larger questions aside while allowing Holden to grow close to someone new and begin exploring his powers not for someone else, or for some greater purpose, but for himself.

One of the major issues with the Holden/Willa (Dilan Gwyn) relationship is the pair have a hazily defined and largely forgotten relationship which neither our protagonist nor the audience knows much about. What little flashbacks we’ve seen of them together in the Realm is hardly romantic, in fact the latest flashbacks from “Last Action Hero” suggests Willa has been using Holden all along. Charlie, despite her obvious duplicitous nature, works much better as a love interest for Holden, though it appears their one night together may be their last.

“The Hour of the Wolf” ends with Holden unleashing his powers against a group of gun-totting Hollow Sky goons (um, don’t they need him alive?). “Last Action Hero” picks up with Jeff (Jeff Pierre) getting an unconscious Holden patched up while a large section of the episode flips to the less interesting stories of Willa and Luke (Jonathan Whitesell), while leaving Charlie behind and keeping the show’s protagonist unconscious for the entire episode. This does offer more flashbacks to the Realm, however these do nothing to help paint Arthur and his group as any more trustworthy than Frost and Hollow Sky.
