Backstrom‘s first (and possibly only) season comes to a close with Backstrom‘s (Rainn Wilson) attempts to prove his father Sheriff Blue Backstrom (Robert Forster) is a corrupt cop turning a blind eye to drug trafficking right under his nose. Backstrom also must deal with Dr. Deb (Rizwan Manji) who has finally tired of the detective’s antics and found him physically unfit to duty.

The death of a performance artist leads Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) into a world of suspects he’s even more dismissive of than usual. The leading suspects in the case turn out to be the victim’s ex-girlfriend (Ever Carradine) who Backstrom nearly mounts during her web-televised life in a plastic box, after surprisingly finding common ground and a mutual attraction, and Valentine‘s (Thomas Dekker) former lover (Ray Santiago) making closing the case a little trickier than usual.

While avoiding his latest mandatory appointment with Dr. Deb (Rizwan Manji), Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) and his unit investigate a rather pedestrian hit-and-run that leaves one wealthy woman dead. Believing the motive for the socialite’s murder is tied to one of the various charities she was involved in, Backstrom and his team go undercover (sort of) and a swanky charity benefit in hopes of discovering the real motive for the murder.

The quirky detective drama doesn’t appear to be in any danger of dying out. The genre’s latest stars Rainn Wilson as an unhealthy, politically incorrect, police detective with self-destructive tendencies and a gift for closing cases. Reinstated to his previous position after serving time as a traffic cop, Backstrom now heads the Special Crimes Unit. The pilot episode centers around Backstrom pissing off nearly everyone he meets while working the murder of a senator’s son which was staged to look like a suicide.
