A few familiar faces return, and a new important supporting character is introduced, in an episode that sets up storylines well beyond next week’s two-part season finale. “Pilina Koko” hits close to home for one member of Five-0 when a woman is found murdered in her own home. While cleaning up the crime scene Hirsch (Willie Garson) is attacked by the sole witness to the crime, a thief who saw a targeted execution of the woman who was once Gabriel Waincroft‘s (Christopher Sean) girlfriend. Leaving behind a young daughter, Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) discovers he has a niece he never knew about.

Hawaii Five-0 opens its Sixth Season with a story about pirates and buried treasure when an author investigating a late 19th Century pirate attack on the islands is found murdered for what he may have uncovered. Investigating the murder leads the group to the great-granddaughter (Samantha Lockwood) of one of the pirates and her partner (Jay Hector) who are willing to do whatever it takes to find the lost treasure. The episode has fun with the pirate theme involving Jerry (Jorge Garcia) in the investigation before Five-0 eventually tracks down the killers but not the elusive treasure which turns out to be more legend than fact.

The season finale of Hawaii Five-0 not only brings us Kono (Grace Park) and Adam’s (Ian Anthony Dale) wedding day, and the return of Catherine (Michelle Borth), but also the arrival of a nuclear warhead on the island which Five-0 frantically searches to find. At first Five-0 believes the thieves plan to sell the warhead to a member of Al Queda in Hawaii, but when the terrorist turns up to be nothing more than a decoy it becomes obvious the men plans for the weapon don’t involve money.

I do enjoy Kono (Grace Park) episodes. While “Mo’o ‘olelo Pu” does offer a case of the week involving a recently paroled meth maker getting back into the business which sent him to prison the main focus of the latest episode is Kono getting lost at sea while attempting to sail around the Hawaiian islands before her wedding day. Along with Kono stuggling to survive her ordeal at sea the episode also offers several flashbacks to her childhood, her relationship with her mother (Catherine Haena Kim), and Kono’s love of the ocean. It’s an unusual episode for the series but one that gives us greater insight to a character not named McGarrett (a definite rarity) and offers the chance for Park to shine.

As Kono (Grace Park) balks at Adam’s (Ian Anthony Dale) latest marriage proposal until he distances himself from the shady practices of the family business Five-0 is called in on the unusual case of a recently-released prisoner (Xzibit) shot trying to break back into prison. “Powehiwehi” marks the return of Greg Grunberg as Jeff Morrison who the ex-con was working for in an attempt to take a dangerous criminal who no one has ever gotten a good look at.

Five-0 is called in to investigate the abduction of a young computer hacker (Matt Bush) from his family (Alan RuckMelinda McGrawGregory Kasyan) only minutes after being released from juvenile detention. The family’s GPS was tampered with, leading them into the perfect isolated location for an abduction, but by the time Kono (Grace Park) and Cho (Daniel Dae Kim) recover the van used in the kidnapping the young victim is already dead.
