Cars 2 on Blu-ray

Although far different in tone and story than the first film (which I love to no end) Cars 2 moves from themes of small town life to take its characters overseas for the World Grand Prix. And the most unlikely one of the bunch will find himself in the middle of a spy adventure. For more on the film check my the original review.

The movie works as well on DVD and Blu-ray as it did in the theaters. The look of the World Grand Prix is terrific and the spy story (even if it does center around one of my least favorite characters) provides some great moments.

The two-disc set includes Blu-ray and DVD copies of the film, commentary by director John Lasseter, and a pair of animated shorts, “Hawaiian Vacation” and “Air Mater.” The five-disc set also includes a 3D disc, digital download, and a few extra features including deleted scenes, documentaries, and a world tour exploring the various cities used in the film.

Check out this rendering of seven movie and television cars in Pixar Cars-style. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind having little die-cast versions of the Ecto-1 and Batmobile on my shelf.

Let me get this out of the way first, for those who might not know, I absolutely loved Cars. How much? Enough for the Pixar film to top my Best Movies of 2006 list. I know some who would argue that it the original Cars isn’t among Pixar’s best. They’re wrong. Very, very wrong.

I have some serious doubts as to how functional (or comfortable) these would be, but I kinda like the design of these Lightning McQueen Earbuds.

Disney and Pixar have released a new trailer for Cars 2 which hits theaters on June 24th. I’ve got to say there’s way too much Mater in this new trailer for me, but the shots of the actual races look amazing.

Fast Five

Ten years ago now, an unassuming car genre movie became a surprise hit. But even then, when The Fast and the Furious made an unseen $144 million dollars, no one could have expected it to spawn a fourth sequel, with a fifth already being written before its predecessor hit theaters. But a lot has changed since then – what started as a film about underground racing has turned into an international action franchise that, in some countries, is outgrossing the traditional Summer-Opening Blockbuster.

But the Fast and, normally, Furious franchise doesn’t need to be as relatively subtle as its beginnings would suggest. Just the opposite, they define the summer movie of a bygone era, where you don’t have to play with genre or superpowers – all you need is beautiful people doing cool shit.

Any fans of Pixar Cars who happen to be around Kansas City should make their way down to Crown Center today when the “Agents on a Mission” tour sponsored by State Farm Insurance hits downtown KC – complete with life-size remote control models of Lightning McQueen, Mater and new character Finn McMissile. If you’re not in KC don’t worry, the tour will run through June, hitting cities throughout North America and racing through the red-carpet premiere in Los Angeles before wrapping up in San Francisco and Sonoma, CA. More pics and info after the jump.
