I’ve been in a very very Morrissey mood of late, and as goes my playlist there goes a post, eh? So take a few and head back to 1986 for some Manchester borne goodness in the form of “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” from The Smiths‘ “The Queen is Dead“.

The Smiths are a band I came to a little late in the game, as by the time I was aware of them musically they were just months away from releasing their last album, “Strangeways, Here We Come” (1987), but since then it’s been a near constant adoration. I’ve always erred towards Morrissey over Johnny Marr’s post-Smiths work (though it’s not without its merits), and while you’d think 20+ years of being a miserable and heartbroken bastard would wear thin, Morrissey consistently surprises me with each subsequent release. While I’m sure it’s not exactly what he’d like to hear, he’ll sadly never surpass the work The Smiths put out from the dreary corners of Manchester, which oddly resonate just as much now as it did in the 80’s.
