Learning that his father’s anger is driving everyone in Berk crazy, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) invites Stoick (Nolan North) back to Dragon’s Edge to help the Dragon Riders capture the elusive Rumblehorn which keeps destroying the group’s camp. Both the return of his son and the thrill of a new adventure lift the chief’s spirits as he and Hiccup are finally able to find the destructive, but not deadly, dragon whose true motives are more complicated than either Viking can guess.

While the Dragon Riders’ home is infested by a flock of Fireworm dragons whose appearance threatens the island they also have to deal with the fallout of Ruffnut (Andree Vermeulen) and Tuffnut (T.J. Miller) finding a claim stone stating that the island and everything on it belongs to one of their ancestors. The new rules, job assignments, taxes, and complete disregard for the Fireworms leads to increasing problems for everyone on the island other than its new owners.

The search for a temporary base to continue their exploration of the maps held inside the Dragon Eye leads Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his friends to a small island inhabited by chickens and a group of small nocturnal dragons who band together and swarm around a leader, named Smidvarg by Tuffnut (T.J. Miller), to form the appearance of a far more imposing giant dragon to ward off predators (such as the Changewings who prey on the weaker dragons).
