“Hail and Farewell” sets up next week’s season finale and a confrontation between Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and Valentine (Alan Van Sprang). Before that happens, however, the Shadowhunters will square off against Jonathan (Will Tudor) and the truce between the Shadowhunters and the Downworlders will crumble as the vampires, mages, and werewolves choose to stand with the Seelie Queen (recast as Sarah Hyland, suggesting a much larger role for the character next season) and her plan to go after Valentine themselves rather than continue to rely on the Shadowhunters.

Realizing Valentine‘s (Alan Van Sprang) plan, Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Jace (Dominic Sherwood) search for the Mortal Mirror with the help of Dot (Vanessa Matsui) who has become its protector following the death of its last guardian. It turns out the item is way easier to find than the other Mortal Instruments Clary has searched for since joining the Shadowhunters. Clary is conflicted by the mission. Despite seeing what her brother is capable of, but still unaware he’s walking around as Sebastian (Will Tudor), she hopes to save him and resents Jace for seeing the need to put him down.

The First Season of Shadowhunters comes to a close with a finale that wraps up several themes of the show’s first year while laying the foundation for next season. As Jace (Dominic Sherwood) struggles with the truth about his parentage, and not nearly enough about how just a few episodes he was macking on his sister, Clary (Katherine McNamara) and the other Shadowhunters discover Hodge (Jon Cor) has stolen the Mortal Cup with plans to deliver it to Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) and double their efforts not only to find Hodge but also go to whatever lengths necessary to free Clary’s mother from her slumber so they might have a chance against Valentine.

Picking up where the show’s Pilot episode left off, “The Descent Into Hell Isn’t Easy” introduces Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) and her nerdy pal Simon (Alberto Rosende) to the secret world of the Shadowhunters (Dominic Sherwood, Emeraude Toubia, Matthew Daddario). Learning more about the world which her mother (Maxim Roy) kept from her, and about the war between the Shadowhunters and the Circle, and suffering another loss of a good friend, Clara embarks on a risky undertaking to the City of Bones where the warlocks known as the Silent Brothers may have the ability to restore the young woman’s memories.
