smallville-chaos-1-booster

The first issue of Smallville Season Eleven: Chaos introduces Eclipso to the Smallville Universe and relocates Superman and Lois Lane to a parallel Earth within the Multiverse (which sadly is populated with Manhunters instead of talking animals in spandex). There’s a lot to enjoy here including appearances by Ted Kord and Booster Gold (who, like his New 52 counterpart, feels a bit off without his gold pants and Elvis collar) along with Zatanna and a bit of old school super-villain mischief from Lex Luthor.

The latest Smallville Season Eleven Special turns its attention the more magical and mystical aspects of the wider Smallville Universe by offering the first team-up of Zatanna and John Constantine. As a bigger fan of Zatanna than Hellblazer, I’ll admit I enjoyed both versions of the characters who are thrown together while dealing with the cult of Brother Blood who desperately wants a book of magic which once belonged to Zatanna’s father.

Just as Superman begins to get the hang of being the latest member of the Green Lantern Corps (a position he’s still trying to find a way to decline) thanks to the tutelage of John Stewart, the Earth is attacked by out-of-control Manhunters believing that some treaty between the Guardians former protectors and its current, less-robotic, group has been broken.

The return of Kryptonians to their sector in space on the new Argo colony (as seen in the Ninth Season finale) has awoken the Green Lantern ring of Space Sector 2813, to seek out a new host. Unable to find anyone acceptable on the colony made up of Kryptonian clones, the ring continues its search until it reaches Earth and finds Superman.

Okay, I have a love/hate relationship with Smallville. The decade-long television show was high on promise (and I’ll admit I liked Tom Welling as a youngish Clark Kent) but often short on delivery which may have something to do with stretching its premise of Clark’s pre-Superman adventures far longer than anyone involved with the show originally thought possible.

Alright, so I totally dropped the ball on getting this up in a timely manner (due to a rather ill-conceived decision to reload my OS), but here it is – Episode 3 of the Four Color Freak-Out. Join myself, our own Cap’n Carrot, and our good pal Bobby Bierley as we chat up the last two weeks in comics, the death of Smallville (and apparently *all* superheroics on TV), and assorted brik-a-brak.
